Ink film technology, also called Thermal Transfer technology, is a method of getting print onto plain A4 paper. It involves a roll of film with ink on one side and, as the paper is passed through the machine, the roll is heated, transferring the ink onto the paper. Most ink films have a set cost per copy as an A4 size piece of film is used for each print out but they do not dry up (as ink cartridges can do if not used for long periods). This means that ink film is the ideal technology for home users who only want to be able to receive a fax every now and again.

Ink films are available in a variety of packs, depending on the manufacturer. Some ink films such as Brother ink films can generally be purchased in packs of two or four and Muratec ink films come packed in singles. Some manufacturers, such as Brother, require their ink films to be installed in a print cartridge which holds the ink film in place. In these cases, the print cartridge (which looks like a plastic frame) will usually be available with an ink film installed inside ready for use straight away. This is perfect for people who do not want to have to change an ink roll, which can be quite complicated.
