Drum units are required, along with a toner cartridge, for laser machines to function. The drum unit gets the paper into the correct place for the toner to be applied. The drum unit will rotate to allow this to happen, slowly wearing out the drum unit. This is why drum units need to be replaced.

Some machines and manufacturers provide combined toner and drum cartridges. These combine the toner cartridge and drum unit into a single consumable item. This means you only have one consumable item to change though it can be more cost effective having separate toner cartridge and drum unit as the drum unit wil usually last a lot longer than the toner cartridge.
